RV Inspiration: RV Upgrades to Invest in Today

by Ken Morris

If you're one of the ten million households across the US who own an RV, there's a good chance this vehicle is your pride and joy. So, it's not surprising you're always on the lookout for the best RV upgrades.

Luckily for you, you're in the right place because we've listed some of our favorite ideas here in this article. Let's dive in!

1. Say No to Carpet

Carpet in most RVs often looks outdated, and once you've used it a few times, it appears worn and faded. Plus, this kind of flooring is a nightmare to clean--especially if your dogs have a nasty habit of trailing in their filth after a long walk!

Amazingly, replacing your RV's carpet with laminate isn't as expensive as you'd think--you're looking at spending roughly $2 to $5 per square foot.

However, you'll need approximately two hours to re-fit the flooring, and this isn't an easy job--so be prepared to put in a little hard graft to get the best results.

2. Install Lights Under the Bed

Installing lights under your bed is way easier than the task above, and when done correctly, it should also only take you ten minutes.

This upgrade is relatively inexpensive--you'll be looking at parting with around $10 to buy the necessary gear.

There's a good chance the master bed lifts to provide additional storage space. However, this nook doesn't usually have any lights which make finding anything a nightmare.

This is where installing a row of LED string lights comes into its own. You could even fit fun colored bulbs to inject a little more personality into your RV.

3. DIY Towel Rack

Again, installing a DIY towel rack is super easy, it should only take you five minutes to complete, and could cost as little as $3 (depending on the rack you purchase). You can easily source one from virtually any homeware store.

It's safe to say RVs hardly ever provide enough towel racks in their bathrooms. This poses a problem for keeping towels clean and dry.

If you don't have enough space to fit one on the bathroom wall of your RV, get a rack you can hang over the door.

4. Innovative Shoe Storage

Instead of buying a shoe rack that takes up a lot of space, use a small coat rack and hang your shoes on the hooks. Not only is this a cheap alternative (you can find ones for as little as $5) but, they're also super easy to install.

This is an absolute must if you're sick and tired or tripping up on all the shoes left lying around your RV!

5. Treat Yourself to a Fresh Mattress

Now, out of all the upgrades listed here, this is one of the more costly options. You could be looking at spending roughly $200. However, it's worth it.

Most RV owners can resonate with the strain of having to sleep on the uncomfy bed that comes with the vehicle.

Rectify this problem by heading to Google and finding a comfortable mattress that fits your RV bed frame. A plump mattress is the key to getting a good nights sleep when you're on the road.

6. Keep Connected

We all know how important internet access is. Whether it's to keep in touch with work, friends, family, or monitoring your finances, you'll need wifi on your travels. However, wifi on camping sites is notoriously rubbish.

You can quickly solve this by purchasing a WiFi boosting antenna, or repeaters. For example, the Alfa 9dBi WiFi Booster SMA OMNI-Directional High-Gain antenna- this should do the trick.

Typically, you screw these onto your RV or mount them on the back of your rig. This is a surefire solution to connecting onto any open wifi source.

7. A Heated Water Hose

An electronically heated water hose provides fresh drinking water to your RV. There's no need to worry about the hose freezing because the core material continually varies its heat output as the surrounding temperatures changes. So, rest assured, even as you travel through winter, you'll be able to access drinking water.

8. Install a Key Holder

This is a straightforward upgrade, but boy oh boy will you feel the benefits! RV's have a habit of cluttering really quickly, which makes finding your keys a bit of a challenge.

Within minutes, and for very little money you can install a key holder that provides an instant solution to this problem.

You can buy key holders from virtually any homeware store, eBay, or Amazon. Or, if you're feeling creative, try making your own.

9. A Slide Out Trash Can

Since space inside an RV is minimal, standard garbage cans take up a lot of room. This is where installing a slide-out trash can is a godsend. Dedicate one of your smaller kitchen cabinets for this purpose.

Just like you'd do for a 'regular' home, head over to your nearest hardware store and buy a kit to install a slide out mechanism for a small-sized bin.

Top Tip: check for any weight limitations. If you overfill your trash, you'll cause yourself a ton of aggravation.
