Why Having a No Freeze RV Hose Is so Essential

by Ken Morris

There's nothing more frustrating than walking outside in the winter and needing access to water, only to find the hose is frozen.

While there are other ways to unfreeze a hose, like leaving the faucet running, many of the solutions are often wasteful and expensive. Other solutions take a lot of effort and can restrict your ability to use as much water as you need.

Which is why we're sharing the benefits of owning a no freeze RV hose. Keep reading to learn how owning one can open up new possibilities.

Who Can Benefit From an RV Hose?

Currently, 8.9 million households own an RV in the United States. While most people think that using their RV is only for the summer months, lately it's become a growing trend to use an RV all year round.

Some people have even chosen to live in their RV while they travel around and explore. But you don't need to own an RV to need an RV hose. You may just be a Tiny House homeowner or a liveaboard. But it doesn't stop there.

Farmers and even small backyard growers need to be able to care for their crops year round to ensure there's always food growing. Equestrians, livestock owners, and people who own outdoor pets also need to make sure they can give water to their animals.

Workcampers, miners, and other industries all need to utilize outdoor hoses in the winter. Making sure they have access to a no freeze hose means less work and more reliability, no matter what your needs are.

What Are Some Uses?

Having a dependable hose is helpful because it's less problematic, but also much safer. For people working or living around rocky grounds or steep inclines, they can ensure access to a water source without putting their lives on the line.

Or what if you want to create your own ice skating rink? Wouldn't it make more sense to have a reliable RV hose instead of using a bucket, or trusting that the hose hasn't frozen over?

But the uses don't end there, you can also wash your car, fill up stock-tanks, supply your hot house with water, and wash equipment. The uses for a no freeze hose are seemingly endless.

How it Works

A few specs about a no freeze RV hose is that it works just like a regular hose would, except it's guaranteed to never freeze and it's even been proven to still work at -40C/F in Alaska.

The hose utilizes a 110 VAC UL rated waterproof heated circuit. The circuit is spirally wrapped around a 3/4" heavy duty hose which is thermally insulated.

It's also protected by an outer braided polyester monofilament and is fitted with hydraulic crimped forged brass fittings.

There's also no need to monitor the hose or keep the temperature. Once plugged in, there's no need to turn the water off unless you want to.

Extra Benefits

While it might not matter to your horses and cows how the water tastes. But if you're a Tiny House homeowner or live year-round in an RV, how good your water tastes will make a huge difference to your quality of life.

A no freeze RV hose meets the highest standards worldwide and is perfectly usable for drinking water, without any weird taste.

But the benefits don't end there. While you might think that having a hose constantly heated will be expensive, it's really not. What the cost amounts to is about 2.5 kW of electricity, or about 25 cents a day.

The cost is so low because you're not heating the water, you're just keeping the water from freezing in the pipe.

Why Not Owning a No Freeze RV Hose Isn't Worth It

Whether you use your RV in the winter or use your outdoor hose for other reasons, there are other ways to defrost a frozen hose:

Disconnecting From the Local Water Supply

Sometimes RV camps will turn off their water supply in the winter. If that happens, you'll need to fill your fresh water holding tank and then disconnect the water hose. You'll need to store it away from the cold so it won't freeze.

The next step is to empty both water tanks which will allow extra room for waste. Just make sure your sewer valves are closed so you won't lose any water.

After that, you can use your fresh water supply, but just make sure to restrict it to ordinary household use. You'll want to use the campground's facilities whenever possible because using too much water could possibly flood your tanks.

Sounds easy, right?

Use a Small Lamp or Electric Blanket

Another alternative to buying your own no freeze RV hose would be to buy a small lamp or use a light bulb and place it between your fresh water holding tank and the water pump.

If that sounds too complicated, or you can't fit the light bulb or lamp closely enough, try using insulation blankets or even an electric heating pad with blankets on the water pump. You can also purchase water tank heaters and place them on the underside of your water tank.

Of course, all of this depends on which option would be right for your RV or outdoor use situation, how protected the hoses and tanks are, and of course, how cold the temperatures drop to.

Of course, water and electricity don't always get along and you'll have to ensure to install everything safely so no one gets electrocuted.

Leave the Faucet Running

Lastly, another alternative method could be to leave the faucet running to prevent it from freezing over. It's the same method you'd use inside your home to prevent your pipes from freezing.

However, leaving the faucet running can get expensive, is a waste of water, and won't work if the temperatures drop too low. Also, if you're using this method in an RV, you have to be careful that the water doesn't drip into your solid waste until it overflows.
